Guide to Altea Costa Blanca, a popular coastal resort near to Benidorm in the province of Alicante.
Altea - Costa Blanca - Spain
Altea - Situated about 7 kilometres north-east of Benidorm on the Costa Blanca, Spain, the pretty coastal town of Altea has often been called 'the artists capital of the Costa Blanca', as the narrow streets of the old town are lined with the workshops and galleries of the artists and potters who have made their home there. On warm summer evenings it is possible to buy handmade items in the Plaza, where the craftsmen display their wares in evening markets.
With its best known landmark being the blue and white domed church (Church of Virgen del Consuleo), Altea is an attractive and picturesque town with a history going back many centuries.
The parochial church dedicated to the Virgen del Consuelo (Our Lady of Solace) was built at the start of the last century, and beside it is the Plaza (Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo) situated high above the town offering superb views of Altea and the coastline beyond.
Altea was occupied by the Moors for many years and they left their influence on the town and of course the entire region, the Moors were ousted by the Christian King Jaime I of Aragon in 1244 and at this time it was a walled town (some parts of these ancient walls still remain today).
